More Churches, not Less

Something special is happening on the northwest side of Chicago—and our Good Friday gathering was a great picture of what God is up to.

We're part of a growing partnership called the Chicagoland Collective, a network of churches and ministries committed to seeing the gospel take root and flourish in neighborhoods throughout the region. Alongside partners like Centro Cristiano and Refuge Chicago, we're linking arms to do together what none of us could do as well alone. Our conviction is simple: more churches, not less. More communities gathered around Jesus. More neighborhoods with a place to belong.

What does that actually look like?

Every week, leaders from the northwest side of the city gather to pray, and monthly we meet to share stories and think strategically about our neighborhoods. Places like Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Avondale, Hermosa, and more. These aren't just meetings—they're moments to celebrate what God is doing, name the real challenges people in our communities face, and commission leaders and church planters with prayer and support. We are friends on mission.

The heart behind all of it comes straight from the Book of Acts: churches multiplying, leaders being sent, and communities being transformed by the good news of Jesus.

"So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied” (Acts 9:31).

Why does this matter for us at Church in the Square?

Well, we've never believed we were meant to go it alone. We're a church plant ourselves—we know what it feels like to need encouragement, resources, and people in your corner. The Chicagoland Collective is an expression of that same spirit extended outward.

Since we first started gathering in Logan Square back in 2018, many churches—for many different reasons—have closed their doors. That's a sorrow worthy of lament. And regrettfully, not many more have opened to take their place.

Hundreds of thousands of people on the northwest side are searching for the same things we all are: meaning, hope, and ultimately—Jesus. The need has never been clearer.

And so, we need more churches, not less.

We're grateful to be in this together.
