Kids helping kids

We believe generosity isn't a program—it's worship. It's one of the ways we train ourselves and our children to live as people who actually believe the gospel.

A couple of months ago, Kids in the Square launched Kids Helping Kids, a new initiative giving our youngest members a concrete way to practice worship through giving. In partnership with The Humanity Share (THS), our kids will directly support education for girls in Kenya—children not so different from them, whose futures are massively affected by their opportunity to attend school.

We’ve learned from our friends at THS that in many parts of Kenya, systemic poverty and cultural expectations push girls out of school before they ever have a chance to find out what they're capable of. THS works to change that—covering school fees, uniforms, and mentorship so that a girl who wants to be a doctor, a teacher, or a journalist actually gets a shot at becoming one.

On the first Sunday of every month, our kids will learn about three of our friends in Kenya—Faith, Deborah, and Joliet. Kids can bring something from home—whatever they feel led to give. This isn't a fundraising push. It's a formation moment. We want our kids to learn, early, that they aren’t too small, too young, or don’t have enough to participate in Jesus’ work to bring heaven to earth. Giving is one way they can do that. Everyone has something. And what we release in faith has a way of traveling further than we can imagine.

We'd love for you to talk with your kids this week—not just about Kenya, but about why we give at all. Like what Paul told the churches in Corinth, "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9). You see, God is generous toward us, so we get to be generous toward others. That's not a transaction. That's discipleship.
