Spiritual practices don’t make us righteous. Instead, they open us up so that we can connect with the one who is righteous. God himself. In other words, receiving, praying, pausing, and giving don’t make us more like Jesus. Only Jesus can make us more like Jesus. Yet, in God’s infinite wisdom and kindness, he’s given us practices (or disciplines) to help our whole being—heart, mind, soul, and body—stay aware and receptive to his transforming presence and Word.
