Jesus is the Author of the Story (Hebrews 12:1-2)
Advent reminds us that Christianity isn’t a religion we climb our way into—it’s a story God invites us into. Hebrews 12 tells us we are “surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses,” men and women whose lives of faith remind us that we were born into a narrative already in progress. Their stories teach us to lay aside distraction, resist sin, and keep running with endurance even when life feels heavy.
But the center of the story—the part that holds everything together—is Jesus. Hebrews calls Him the “founder and perfecter of our faith.” He is both our example and our power. He lived perfectly on our behalf, and by His Spirit, He empowers us to live faithfully today. Looking to Jesus isn’t just inspiration—it’s transformation.
And here’s the twist: the whole story is aimed at joy. Hebrews tells us Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before him”—the fullness of joy in the presence of God (Psalm 16:11). Joy isn’t something we chase; it’s something that has come to us. Advent declares that the Author stepped onto the stage so that we could share in His joy.
Just like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, our hearts begin to burn when we hear the story again—when we remember who Jesus is and what He has done. May this season reawaken that joy in you. May you find strength to run your race with endurance, knowing the Author is writing a story far better than the one we’d write for ourselves.
Reflection Questions
What weight or sin is clinging closely to you right now, and how is it keeping you from running the race with endurance?
Where in your life do you need to fix your eyes more fully on Jesus—as both your example and your power?
How is God inviting you to receive joy this Advent, rather than trying to manufacture it on your own?
