Foundation of the Rock

Luke 6:46–49

At the close of his sermon, Jesus asks one of the most piercing questions in all of Scripture:

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”

With this question, Jesus goes straight to the heart of discipleship. It’s possible to admire him, sing about him, and even talk about following him—yet build a life that’s not rooted in him. Jesus warns that calling him “Lord” means very little if our lives don’t reflect his words.

Then, he tells a story about two builders. One digs deep and builds on rock; the other builds without a foundation. Both houses look fine—until the flood comes. Storms reveal what’s been hidden. When life shakes us, we find out whether we’ve built on Jesus or on ourselves.

Jesus says a strong foundation starts with three movements:

  1. Come to me. The Christian life begins with closeness to Jesus, not performance. He’s not looking for perfection but presence.

  2. Listen to me. The closer we draw to Jesus, the more we trust that his way is true—even when it runs against the current of our culture.

  3. Do what I say. Listening naturally leads to living. We build our lives on solid ground when obedience flows from love.

But digging deep is hard. It takes time, humility, and honesty. Sometimes we resist because obedience exposes what we’d rather keep hidden. Yet Jesus invites us into the kind of life that can withstand anything—not because we’re strong, but because he is.

The foundation Jesus offers isn’t built on effort or moral success; it’s built on himself. When we come close, listen, and follow, we discover that the storms can’t shake us. Even judgment can’t shake us—because Jesus has already borne it for us. Our peace is not in what we’ve done, but in the One who holds us fast.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life are you calling Jesus “Lord” but struggling to do what he says?

  2. What helps you stay close to Jesus—especially when life feels busy or distracted?

  3. How might you “dig deeper” in this season—through prayer, honesty, or obedience?

  4. What false foundations (comfort, success, approval) are you tempted to build on?

  5. How does it bring you peace to know that Jesus has already endured judgment for you?
