finding the voice of lady wisdom
Proverbs 8 introduces us to Lady Wisdom, not just as an idea or a virtue, but as a presence. In verse 22, she declares:
“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old.”
Before mountains or oceans, before the dust of the earth, Wisdom was there—at God’s side, rejoicing in His creation. Her voice echoes across time, calling out to all people:
“To you, O people, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.” (v. 4)
This personification of wisdom isn’t just poetic—it’s profoundly personal to me. I was raised by a woman of deep wisdom, my late mother, Vijaya Jesudoss. She poured her prayers and Scripture into my life, even gifting me a Bible she had annotated cover to cover. Her favorite book to point me toward? Proverbs.
Growing up in an immigrant home, with a dad who studied theology and a mom whose name means “victory,” wisdom was more than a concept—it was an inheritance. And yet, even with all that, I still struggle (as many of us do) to live wisely.
But Proverbs doesn't just give us rules—it gives us relationship. As Tim Keller notes, wisdom isn’t simply knowledge or moral guidance. It’s about walking in alignment with the One who made the world.
Which leads us to a stunning truth: Lady Wisdom ultimately points us to Jesus Christ. In Colossians 2:3, Paul writes that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” And in 1 Corinthians 1:30, Paul declares that Jesus has become for us wisdom from God. Where we fall short of wisdom, Jesus steps in—not just to guide us, but to redeem us.
So when Wisdom calls, it’s not just an invitation to be smarter or make better choices. It’s a call to align our lives with God’s design. It’s a call to relationship, to trust, and ultimately, to life:
“For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 8:35)
This isn’t a one-time offer. The invitation is open, again and again. Whether you’re just beginning your faith journey, walking through seasons of uncertainty, or feeling on fire for God—Lady Wisdom calls.
The only question is: Will we respond?
Reflection Questions:
What does wisdom look like in your daily life?
In what areas are you being invited to align more closely with God’s design?
How might Jesus—the embodiment of wisdom—be calling you into deeper relationship today?
