Members do the work of ministry as the Church. They do this by using their gifts together for God’s glory. The local church is a single expression of the solitary Body and Bride of Christ. Therefore it is fitting for each local church to function in unity within and between congregant members (1 Corinthians 12:12-26). In particular it is vital that proper church membership be practice for the sake of accountability, unity, respect, order, discipline, and reflecting the oneness of the Godhead.
From the early days of the Church, congregation members were instrumental in sending and praying for leaders, affirming the God-given direction of the church, and holding leadership accountable (see Acts 13 and 15; 1 Timothy 5:19). Additionally Paul’s letters addressed specific individuals he knew to have committed to the local church to whom he was writing. And to the much maligned church in Corinth he prioritized explaining the metaphor of the body and the members of that body functioning in commitment, cooperation, order, and joy (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).

Membership courses will be offered multiple times a year. We’d love for you to attend this class for the purpose of discerning the Lord’s will for your life and to become more familiar with Church in the Square and our mission on the northwest side of Chicago. Each class will be identical and will cover three aspects of church membership—foundation, purpose, and experience of membership at Church in the Square.
